Abstract

Guargum is a versatile commodity critical to diverse sectors such as oil and gas, food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Despite its widespread industrial use, the guar industry faces complex challenges due to its climatic sensitivity, market volatility, and increasing competition from synthetic polymers. This paper explores the factors shaping the supply and demand of guar gum by analyzing qualitative data from ten semi-structured interviews with producers and suppliers across India and the United States. The study reveals five key drivers: dependence on oil and gas markets, agricultural challenges, lack of research and development, inadequate marketing, and rising competition from synthetic substitutes. The findings suggest that strategic investments in innovation and awareness are crucial to ensure the industry’s resilience and sustainability.
