Abstract

This paper presents the novel Lean-Agile Model for Product Development (LAMPD), which systemically in tegrates Lean Product Development (LeanPD) with agile methodologies for hardware product development. This paper discusses the successful implementation of the LAMPD model based on a real industrial case study from Atlas Copco Henrob. The case study focuses on the redesign of the air-tube interface, a critical sub-assembly of a Self-Pierce Riveting (SPR) system used for automotive body-in-white applications. The successful implementation validated LAMPD’s effectiveness in generating a comprehensive set of alterna tive design solutions. The two optimal solutions were subsequently validated using Additive Manufactur ing (3D-printed) prototypes and rigorous laboratory testing, ultimately demonstrating their superior design quality. The comprehensive evaluation phase leveraged Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation and was augmented by commercially available generative AI CAD, which was used to expand the set of design alter natives.
