Abstract

Unfortunately, although life expectancy has increased in the last decades, old age is often complicated by

multiple chronic conditions that place a significant burden on social and healthcare systems. The presence

of these chronic comorbidities is often the result of a lack of optimal preventive measures throughout

life—specifically regarding the potential to slow aging processes at all levels, but particularly within the

cardiovascular system. It is well known that, despite significant advances in the prevention and treatment

of cardiovascular diseases, they remain the leading cause of death. Therefore, it is essential to identify and

investigate the biological mechanisms driving cardiovascular aging and to determine whether interventions

targeting these mechanisms can promote healthy aging. The aim of this narrative review is to examine the

scientific literature on two topics that strongly influence the aging process: insulin resistance, which has a

negative impact, and myokines, which have a positive one.
