Abstract

Medicinal plants have long served as an important source of therapeutic agents and continue to play a significant role in pharmaceutical development. Agricultural resources, particularly medicinal and aromatic plants, provide a rich reservoir of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, glycosides, and essential oils that exhibit diverse pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antiviral effects. Sustainable cultivation and scientific management of medicinal plants are essential to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality raw materials while conserving biodiversity and supporting environmental sustainability. Modern agricultural practices, including Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP), organic farming, precision agriculture, plant biotechnology, and tissue culture, have improved the quality, yield, and phytochemical composition of medicinal plants used in pharmaceutical industries. Advances in analytical techniques, metabolomics, nanotechnology, and molecular biology have further accelerated the identification and development of plant-derived drugs. However, challenges such as overharvesting, habitat loss, climate change, variability in phytochemical content, and inadequate quality control remain significant barriers to their large-scale pharmaceutical utilization. This review highlights the importance of agricultural resources in pharmaceutical development and emphasizes the integration of sustainable agricultural practices, conservation strategies, and innovative technologies to promote medicinal plant utilization for sustainable healthcare and future drug discovery.
